The older woman smiled, her round cheeks blushing with ruddy happiness. “Oh, William.” She sat her stout frame on the seat next to him and refilled his cup from the decanter on the table. “I’m glad you came to visit today. I’ve missed having you here, we all have. That new mistress, she’s not as respectful of the staff as you’ve always been.”

He patted her hand affectionately. “I’ve missed all of you, too.” He meant it. It had been a long two years away from them. He’d always thought of the staff, especially Mrs. Bankert, as family, and wasn’t at all surprised that his stepmother hadn’t. Will would have visited sooner, but he’d waited until Lady Colton had left for the afternoon. Colton Manor was his now, but the Lady of the house wasn’t at all ready to vacate the premises. Rather than press the issue while his innocence was still up for debate, he’d waited until she left to visit her mother before stopping in to see Mrs. Bankert.
